United Press reports recount two Chinese assaults on Bunker Hill near Panmunjom in heavy rain. Marines repelled the attacks with grenades and shellfire, claiming 2,100 Chinese casualties since the battle began, as air battles and naval strikes continued nearby.
New York stocks showed subdued activity with minor net moves as trading paused. The day featured scattered gains and losses with Chesapeake & Ohio, Texas Co, Du Pont, Chrysler and Douglas Aircraft among leaders on the upside and Bethlehem Steel, Dome Mines, American Woolen and Standard Oil (NJ) among the declines.

Atlantic City report says a three month probe found racketeer influence in the AFL, with three locals possibly losing charters. The AFL executive council, meeting in closed session, will hear the committee’s findings and plan charter revocations if warranted. Frank Costello, 61, surrendered at the Federal Courthouse to start an 18 month sentence for contempt of Congress. He entered with his attorney, will be housed in a 26 man cell, and may seek parole after six months. He previously faced convictions for bootlegging gambling and political fixing.

Florida counties LaFayette Suwannee Bay Calhoun Dixie Escambia Franklin Gadsden Gulf Hamilton Holmes Jackson Jefferson Leon Liberty Madison Okaloosa Santa Rosa Taylor Wakulla Walton Washington and 34 days of drought hurt pastures crops. Oklahoma areas Haskell Major and Muskogee counties face drought loss with damage to pastures corn sorghum and hay.
Weather forecasters predicted an end to a heat wave with temperatures above 100 in many areas and substantial rain for drought regions. In Spartanburg South Carolina a suspect is held for questioning in the murder of 27 year old L B Moorman and the rape of his girlfriend at a lovers lane. The assailant allegedly smashed the car window and forced the woman to submit. The victim died from a temple shot wound and the woman was left traumatized. The woman described the attacker as a heavyset Negro man who was shirtless and possibly barefoot.
The CIO executive board blasted the AFL United Textile Workers for endangering thousands of workers and accused the rival union of smear tactics like McCarthyism. It attacked George Baldanzi for joining the AFL, claiming he would lure 100000 CIO members, while CIO President Emil Rieve said only about 15000 defected and dues issues restricted more. The resolution calls on CIO affiliates to support the CIO textile workers against the raiding efforts.
Asheville hosts the North Carolina State Exchange Clubs convention with 250 delegates and daily sessions. State President Dr. J. B. Morris of Durham presides until tomorrow's elections determine his successor. In Carthage a Southern Pines man was sentenced to three to five years for abortion after pleading nolo contendere. In Durham John D. Wheeler was named president of the Mechanics and Farmers Bank succeeding Dr. C. C. Spaulding who died. the bank is the second largest of 14 Negro‑owned and operated banks with assets about 5.48 million dollars.
Harry Stewart, 33, was appointed director of the North Carolina State Wolfpack Club and the college Student Aid Association. The announcement came from H. C. Kennett of Durham, president of the Wolfpack Club. Stewart will keep his role as manager of the college cafeteria.
