John Alexander Shelton, 75, who worked 50 years for Snow Lumber, arrived in High Point after a wandering 1882-1883 trek from Mecklenburg Virginia. He traveled with friends to Greensboro for a drunken spree, cared for a comrade, and settled into High Point to work from 1884, rising to shop foreman. He recalls a harsh winter crossing and a hospitable Randleman farmhouse that fed him on the way. Shelton married Nancy Birch in 1885 and raised five children in High Point where he remains a fixture at the Snow Lumber shop.
