Allied air forces pound Japan with a massive 5000 ton demolition raid as B 29s strike Tokyo amid Potsdam talk. The U S third fleet and British carrier task force lurk off Japanese shores while American British aircrews hit targets near Tokyo and Me Me, with weather hindering operations.
Swiss political department says no coded Japanese note received by 5:15 p.m. Bern time. In Washington, Presidential Secretary Dum trew says Japan has not yet replied to the allies terms. Officials relay that coded cables do not contain the awaited answer as pressure mounts on Tokyo and Bern to confirm any surrender communication.

Infantile paralysis touched Thomasville as an 18 month old child of Pfe. John T. Rich and Mrs. Rich was taken to Baptist hospital in Winston-Salem for diagnosis and treatment. Physicians reported paralysis with one limb affected yesterday and the other slightly affected this morning. The child was being moved to the infantile paralysis clinic in Charlotte for further care.
Associated Press reports Japan’s reply to Allied surrender terms is en route to Washington and likely to accept Potsdam proclamations. Domei said acceptance was forthcoming, with officials noting the emperor may remain on the throne and the nation vows to forgive past efforts. bevestigd by Truman aides as nearing the end of the vigil.
FLORENCE SOUTH CAROLINA August 14 The federal state crop reporting service notes steady prices on tobacco markets along the North and South Carolina border belt with a one dollar per hundred decline for most grades from last Friday. Quality offerings slightly lower and heavy sales continue on all markets as farmers seek to move crop onto warehouse floors amid widespread black sales.
Judge John J. Parker of Charlotte has a good chance of appointment to the Supreme Court vacancy, a Justice Department official said. Parker, senior judge of the Fourth Circuit, was nominated in 1930 but rejected by the Senate amid labor and civil rights opposition. Four candidates are under consideration for the seat and a recommendation will go to the president before Congress reconvenes.
