Flying Col Charles A Lindbergh and his wife plan a vast extended journey after originally aiming for the Orient. Weather may dictate departure toward Safety Bay then westward across Asia Europe and the Atlantic with a possible Siberia route and Azores crossing.
Washington August 14 AP A movement for guaranteed employment and possibly a five day work week has gained momentum among major industries. Under the plan, leaders would assure a set number of workers uninterrupted and profitable employment for a long period. Labor favors a shorter week with six days pay, while utilities and AFOL align with the plan, with the U S chamber of commerce backing it under Julius Barnes.
In Goshen New York on August 14 John M Keno of Rome Georgia chased the pace to win the opening heat of the Hambletonian stakes with a 2 04 1 4 mile Calumet Berrica owned by J O McAllister Lexington Ky finished second and Calumet Butler also of Lexington placed third. In Washington on the same date Senator Nye announced hearings would resume August 27 into 1928 campaign funds involving Bishop James Cannon of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
The farm board’s plan to plow under one third of standing cotton was rejected by governors. Only four replies reached the board, with Texas pledging support and Georgia’s governor opposing. Resumption of stabilization purchases remains unlikely absent broad approval.
At Fort Bragg North Carolina the 113th Field Artillery National Guard holds its annual encampment with 677 enlisted and 59 officers present out of 691 enlisted and 64 officers authorized. Chicago August 14 chaos as vandals believed to be hired by racketeers struck seven cleaning and dyeing shops. Clothing was doused with acid and about $10,000 worth of customers garments were destroyed, tied to Michigan Cleaners and Dyers Company’s alleged racketeering.
Five persons were killed and at least 15 injured when an apartment house collapsed after an explosion in Lyons France. Three others were missing. The accident was tentatively attributed to an illuminating gas explosion.
Producers of granite sand and gravel testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission against a proposed 15 percent rail rate increase. Benjamin J. Brooks of the National Granite Commission warned the rise would demoralize the industry and push business to competitors, potentially raising carriers revenue loss. W P Ahearn of the National Land and Gravel association said higher charges could accelerate railroad substitution.

Fire of undetermined origin last night destroyed the Burlington Daily Times plant with an estimated loss of 60000. The blaze spread to the adjoining B A Seller Department store but did not destroy it. Editor C F Crowson Jr said the plant would be rebuilt and the paper would publish today and until the new building is ready.
The South reacts to a Farm Board plan to destroy one third of the 1931 cotton crop by plowing under every third row. Eight governors oppose, two favor cooperation, and others voice cautious support. Senator Caraway offers a counter plan to buy 7,000,000 bales at 8 cents or more with grower contracts not to plant. Atlanta August 14 AP report notes cotton industry distress and southern responses.
In Ann Arbor Michigan on August 14 prosecutors moved swiftly after confessions from Frank Oliver Fred Smith and David Blackstone to convict them of quadruple torch slayings. Within six hours all four received life sentences and were admitted to the Michigan prison at Jackson.

President Hoover plans to go to his Rapidan camp tomorrow with Mrs Hoover likely joining him later. Mrs Hoover will travel from Washington by boat and reach Newport News tomorrow morning for the christening of two ships.
Solicitor Zeb V Nettles expects to finish the state's evidence by week end or early next week in the banking case involving Col Luke Lea Luke Lea Jr and E P Charnet of Nashville and Wallace B Davis of Asheville. They face charges of conspiracy to defraud the Central Bank and Trust Company through alleged manipulation of cashier s checks notes and bank credits. state prosecutors would need about three full weeks for prosecution testimony if the case continues as planned.
Roy Yates state senator from Passaic County was seriously wounded with a gunshot to the abdomen in an apartment in New York. Ruth Jayne, 25, found there, was questioned. she claimed to know Yates too well and spoke incoherently about the incident. Yates, married with three daughters Olive 15 Elsie 12 Ruth 10, remained hospitalized.
A 60-cent coin dropped in the Barnwell South Carolina post office led to a search where a carpenter opened a cabinet and uncovered 194 dollars in bills checks and silver hidden behind it. Postmaster W M Harris oversaw the discovery on August 14.
