Johnson presses tax hike amid upbeat 1967 economy
President Johnson's push for a 10 percent surcharge faces a wary Congress as 17 of 21 economic indicators rise. The administration cites a Commerce Dept report showing inventories declining for the first time in six years, while Treasury Secretary Fowler and advisers argue the economy can absorb higher taxes. For a $5,000 two child family, tax rise would be zero. $7,500 would add 69. $10,000 would add 111. $20,000 would add 316 in proposed yearly increases.

Johnson vetoes bill expanding federal life insurance
President Johnson vetoed a measure to extend life insurance for about 2.5 million federal employees and urged Congress to limit pay raises to his 4.5 percent recommendation. He argued the bill would cost too much while federal needs for children, the poor, the elderly, and Vietnam veterans take priority. The White House had proposed a $1.3 million addition to coverage, opposed to a plan raising to $61 million in the first year, expanding government premium support.
