An earthquake of moderate intensity appeared on the seismograph at Georgetown University starting 7 08 p m EST and peak at 8 09 p m EST ending 9 20 p m EST. The epicenter was reported 9 000 miles from Washington with uncertain direction.
Railroads filed in the District of Columbia seeking a temporary and permanent injunction to stop the federal retirement board from operating the pension act. A committee of five attorneys for more than 150 railroads argued the act violates the commerce clause and the fifth amendment. The hearing was postponed to Wednesday. the act requires a 2 percent payroll tax to fund pensions for workers with 30 years on the job or age 65.
Tobacco prices rose on the South Carolina Belt markets with resumed sales after the weekend. Early sales indicated an average price up by about a cent or more, with some grades up to $8 per hundred pounds. Lake City and Lumberton reported strong activity and high averages.
The government plans a major land buying program to create recreational centers for industrial workers and relocate land-poor farmers. The Federal Surplus Relief Corporation will spend about 6 million dollars to acquire 14,000 acres in several states and develop camps and trails for public use.

Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, isolated for five months on the Antarctic rim, is found at a weather post 123 miles south after a three day tractor trek. Dr. Thomas C. Poulter leads the party of three who battled extreme cold and fatigue to reach Byrd, who is weak but hopeful. The crew reports no signs of scurvy and vows Byrd will recover with rest and relief from duties.
L A Johnson of Asheville was elected president of the State Association Journeymen Barbers. The next annual meeting will likely be held in Durham with plans to be announced at year’s end.
Will Rogers reports in Tokyo that he dined with President Roosevelt in Honolulu and received advice akin to Coolidge’s on Mexico. The President warned against provoking Japan, urging restraint to keep them from attacking first. Rogers notes peaceful arrival and mentions Japan’s likely naval buildup.
