A Houston construction worker bought a .44 revolver for his Army buddy David Berkowitz on a trip to New York City. Federal agents confirm the Charter Arms Bulldog was purchased June 12, 1976 by Billy Dan Parker of Houston, and ballistics link the gun to Berkowitz’s attacks including Stacy Moskowitz’s July 31 death. Parker, unavailable for comment, and Rothgeb of ATF say no known illegal act is evident. KHOU TV cites Parker’s interview claiming Berkowitz bought the pistol for protection on his drive home.
New York AP reports David Berkowitz known as the Son of Sam, described as introverted and misfit by friends. He faced psychiatric examination after the sixth .44-caliber killing as police pursued his trial readiness. He reportedly claimed messages through a dog and was held without bail for evaluation. He was born David Falco in 1953 and adopted by the Berkowitz family.
