In Vietnam a large air strike supported by 96 U S and Vietnamese helicopters aimed at a Communist concentration of about 3 000 Viet Cong. Ground fog delayed the launch but once under way nearly 1 000 Vietnamese troops participated. A young U S Army lieutenant was killed at his controls amid the action.
United States officials defended military strength after Peking radio condemned Soviet attitudes and North Vietnam accused Washington of provocation. China said Hanoi sent an urgent IC C complaint while North Vietnamese leaders arrived in Hanoi amid a growing crisis.
Turkish jet planes conducted low altitude reconnaissance over northwest Cyprus amid U N appeals to halt flights. Greek Cypriots protested outside the U S Embassy in Nicosia urging Americans to leave as Athens warned Turkey over air space violations.

Canterbury England AP Ian Lancaster Fleming author of James Bond dies at 56 after a heart attack. He built a fortune from novels and films including Dr No and From Russia With Love. Former CIA director Allen Dulles admired his work. Fleming served in wartime naval intelligence and started as a Reuters journalist.
President Johnson told the American Bar Association that the civil rights law will be enforced and citizens must observe it. He urged lawful, peaceful processes while condemning violence in Harlem and Brooklyn and criticized Goldwater's stance on national policy.
Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy appears on track for the Democratic nomination with state party leaders weighing his bid. Spokesmen caution a final decision is premature as Kennedy maintains a Virginia home and plans to announce a run in the lead up to the Democratic National Convention in August.
