Methodists Launching Evangelistic Movement

Western North Carolina Methodists launch a major evangelistic drive climaxing June 10 1962 with church members joining this year. Goals include reaching the unchurched and backsliders, baptizing babies, a 4 percent net membership gain, and a religious census. A Pfeiffer College school for resource leaders is set for August 21 22 1962 with district and local church training events across multiple cities February through March 1962.

English Street Baptist Church Adds Educational and Music Directors

English Street Baptist Church announced the hiring of Rev. Bill Arkinney as educational director and Hugh Whitley as director of music. Arkinney, a Spruce Pine native, has 13 years in accounting and office management with prior service in World War I and training at Wake Forest College. Whitley, from Albemarle, a Ferndale Junior High teacher, holds a degree from Catawba College and has served as organist and choir director in multiple denominations. he plans to organize seven choirs at the church by September.

Indian Woman Educator Gets Post At Isabella Thoburn College

Dr Eva I Shipstone was elected president of Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow succeeding Dr Evangeline Thillayampalam who retired. Shipstone, a former psychology professor at the college, studied at Vanderbilt Radcliffe and Boston universities. Founded in 1886 the college bears the name of missionary Miss Isabella Thoburn and now celebrates its Diamond Jubilee with about 400 students including international learners from Africa Ceylon Burma Malaya and the United States.

High Point Methodists Attend Leadership School at Lake Junaluska

About 30 members of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church joined sessions of the Leadership School held annually at Lake Junaluska in August. The event is sponsored by The Methodist Church General Board of Education with the Southeastern Jurisdiction’s Conference Boards. Courses cover child work, beliefs, Bible context, youth, missions, handicapped education, and adult church education, with hands on labs for children and youth groups. The group stayed in a two apartment cottage, aiding volunteers led by Ann Tyler, Mrs. George Livles Jr., and Mrs. Harriss Covington.

Youth Choir Travels To Burlington

The Youth Choir of Green Street Baptist Church traveled by car to Burlington to sing at the First Baptist Church Youth Revival on Friday evening August 11. They performed a classical program for the revival and followed with a Youth Fellowship concert featuring six spirituals. Local groups Caroletes El Rey Tres The Kingsmen Quartet and a new boys ensemble appeared at the fellowship.
