Curb on Installment Buying Moves in Defense Drive
Washington action tightens consumer credit in a broad curb on installment buying. President Roosevelt issued an executive order directing the Federal Reserve to regulate about ten billion dollars in credit, with penalties up to ten years in prison and ten thousand dollars fine for violations. The aim is to conserve materials for defense, curb inflation, and limit purchases of durable goods on credit, with exemptions for cash buyers and new home construction loans.
