Heads of seven railway shopcraft unions on strike announced after the final conference that they reject President Harding's last settlement proposal. They demand guaranteed reinstatement with seniority rights unimpaired, insisting seniority be protected rather than left to the railroad labor board adjudication.
Raleigh reports a free teachers placement bureau sees many openings in mathematics French and other subjects, with a shortage of Latin teachers and rural positions offering lower salaries. The bureau urges qualified teachers to register and is organizing local units in counties and cities. Car road labor rumors denied amid steady revenue growth in state and federal offices. Reverend Cyclone McLendon praises North Carolina on his cross country revival journey.
Washington reports union leaders scheduled a 2:30 p m meeting with President Harding to deliver a quick reply to his latest and final settlement offer. Early morning talks suggested rejection is likely, with executives planning to present conditional acceptance later in the afternoon.
Clyde Hester a local sheet metal worker beat Thomas Webb known as Peeping Tom after catching him peeping through a neighbor’s window. Webb suffered a severely battered head and a broken hand, with several gold teeth knocked out, and was taken to the police station for detention.

James Morris of Greensboro drove a closed car over a railroad embankment at Broad and Lindsay streets Friday night. His companion reportedly jumped before the fall. the car landed on the side track with minor injuries to occupants. Morris pleaded reckless driving and paid $25 plus costs.
Mrs. John Hiatt was found guilty of vagrancy in municipal court this morning. Judgment was suspended upon payment of costs and staying at home to care for her children. Mamie Allen had charge not pressed. Wilmer Brown’s breach of the peace case also ended with suspended judgment on costs.
August A Busch of St. Louis returned from Europe aboard the George Washington asserting that liquor was sold on shipping board ships. He says government enforcement on land contrasts with what he calls open sale aboard vessels and notes heavy drinking during the recent voyage to Europe and the return trip.
In Chicago on August 12 Frederick Burger was adjudged feeble minded in probate court after his bride deserted him two hours after their wedding. His landlady Mrs. Mary Driesk sought a conservator, and Burger said a friend had found him a wife for 136 dollars.
Washington reports that on August 12 officials said President Harding has temporarily halted plans to seek congressional action on the rail strike, with advisers indicating a pause in the approach to the crisis.
Pelham A. Barrows, acting Nebraska governor for a week, earns $5 a day as strike guard for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad after stating he had only $3.40 in the bank and $1.60 in his pocket. Nebraska law makes the lieutenant-governor nonremunerative, and no funds exist to pay his $1,800 claim for acting as chief executive. Barrows is a former national commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Real estate activity figures show about 625000 involved in yesterday's deeds. Nine registrations include two High Point transfers on North Hamilton street and a Sunset drive Irving Park sale in Greensboro for 12009. Other parcels change hands across Magnolia Street Beast Street Obermeyer East Market and College Place with prices from 509 to 5000.
In London on August 12 Prof. MacBride told a Neo-Malthusian Birth Control conference that clergy now have small families. He said thirty years ago clergy were prolific breeders, while lower-class workers have larger families and affluent families have one or two children. He warned unchecked reproduction would overrun the earth and crush other life.
Arch ie Ramey serving a moonshining sentence received permission from Circuit Judge Lamb via Sheriff C H Nixon to visit his home in Amtrim County to see his deceased child.
The school board met and set the coming year dates, approved renovations at South Main and Park Street schools, and received Superintendent Marrs annual report. Open date is October 2 with repairs limited to essentials and a library room planned at South Main.
In Salisbury Australia the entire striking group at Southern's Spencer shops was mobilized for picket duty. About 500 pickets stood around the shop yards this morning, with roughly 1,500 workers split into three eight hour groups. Reports say several Black workers who had been employed there were assaulted by those on duty. The sheriff investigated but could not obtain usable information.
Operators and miners resumed negotiations in Cleveland aiming at a strike settlement. Railroad workers refused to haul coal mined under state troop protection until trains were moved from the military area. Forty union mines in Pennsylvania boosted output more than fivefold after resuming operations.
Data shows 512 white and 1,001 Negro children in school age groups. Attendance totals include 2,800 white and 734 Negro pupils enrolled. average white attendance 2,328 and Negro 624. Four hundred and fifty-four white and thirty-seven Negro children were dropped. A 25 year earlier report listed 1,170 school aged youths with 712 attending.
The Farriss Bible class of First Baptist launches a campaign to add 300 members. The class divides into Reds and Blues with A I Harris leading the Blues and H Massey guiding the Reds. Massey offers a prize for the member who recruits the most new scholars, and the losing team will host a winner’s banquet at an unspecified date and venue.

The Old Hickory club, owned by High Point businessmen, will be sold at auction Monday morning at 11 o'clock by J Sib Burton. Located about two years old off the Guilford College Jamestown road near Hickory Grove church, the estate includes a 53 acre farm a one room clubhouse and a large lake with wild fish. The sale follows a stockholders meeting that decided to dispose of the property and strong interest is expected.
New York cotton futures opened steady with gains as October to May contracts rose 4 to 13 points on optimism about European demand and weather. Trade buying supported levels near 21.28 for December, but weekend profit taking and private rain reports prompted selling.

Kansas City on August 12 reports sultry July heat harming youth Howard Clayton. A demonstrative witness told Judge M J Kilroy he “couldn’t believe his eyes” when Clayton rested beneath an oak tree near the business district, dressed in Adam.
