House backs women's rights amendment amid House
A House committee backed a companion measure to the Senate women’s rights amendment while opposition warned of delays in full committee action. The measure would guarantee equality of rights under the law regardless of sex and face hearings if returned to the committee. Rep. Gerald Ford led the women’s champions with Rep. Margaret Heckler and Rep. Leonor Sullivan among critics concerned about protections for women. The name for the Senate version’s cosigners and the political dynamics were noted as key to advancing the amendment.
