Washington officials say despite tension and split between the United States and the Soviet bloc, talks point to near term gains. Khrushchev seeks a limited East West nonaggression pact and a broader diplomatic approach, with emphasis on reducing the risk of crisis.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk, after a week of talks with Soviet leaders including Khrushchev, is due home Sunday and will report to President Kennedy early this week on prospects for the next round. He stopped in Bonn Saturday and will outline the West’s outlook to Kennedy.
Roosevelt Dargan, 45, trapped in a shattered cab two miles south of Concord, was in satisfactory condition after an Atlanta physician used a pocket knife to perform an emergency leg amputation without anesthesia. Rescuers pried the truck loose but the leg was too mangled.
