The Senate Banking Committee voted 8-7 to urge an override of President Eisenhower's veto on the housing bill totaling 1.375 billion dollars. Two Democratic leaders who backed a reduced 1.05 billion version reversed stance, citing no administration acceptance for the trimmed proposal.
Louisiana Governor Earl K Long planned to carry his fight to the people after a rebellious Legislature killed his special session before it opened an hour old. Rep Ben Holt led the move to end the two day session prompting a $148000 cost and signaled a broader clash over Long’s leadership and LSU board chair Theo Cangelosi.
Washington July employment reached a record 67,594,000 with a 252,000 rise from June and 2,415,000 more than July last year. Unemployment fell 238,000 to 3,744,000, down 1,550,000 from July 1958, despite farm job declines and teen labor shifts amid the steel strike.
Charlotte's airport is expected to gain jet port status earlier than the Greenville Spartanburg project. The industry rebukes his absence while a second-string bargaining group leads talks with company reps led by R. Conrad Cooper and joined by federal cochair Joseph F. Finnegan.

In Des Moines Iowa a father Ira Curtis dug with his bare hands for about an hour to free his 4 year old son Billy trapped by a ditch cave in. Billy was rescued alive after 45 minutes of frantic effort with Donald 9 and Marvin Connett 8 also involved as neighbors and siblings.

In San Francisco 17 000 ILWU members ratified a three year agreement with the Pacific Maritime Association granting workers a cash share of productivity gains from automation. Employers will contribute 1 percent of the payroll the first year while maintaining the existing workforce, aside from attrition. The union pledged not to oppose new dock machinery.
In Little Rock Arkansas the School Board vows fair firm action against disruption as white students protest integration at Central and Hall high schools. Past term saw discipline of white pupils during clashes with nine integrated Negroes under federal guard.
Joseph P. Crowley once Yale football star and acquitted in a Tokyo murder trial was found dead on his 50th birthday in Hamden Connecticut. Coroner reports barbiturate-related findings though autopsy is inconclusive and toxicology pending. Crowley had rebuilt a New Haven business life with his brother-in-law T A D Jones Jr. after a fatal Tokyo case during a 1958 oil firm venture.
Charles E. Stuts, 76, pioneer in American sports cars and builder of the Stutz Bearcat, died of cancer in Miami. He co founded the Stutz Motor Car Co. in 1909 with his cousin Harry Stutz, with Charles driving and racing widely. He moved to Miami in 1940 after production ceased. no survivors are listed.
New York AP reports an apparent death by self harm from overdose of pills. Muriel Miles once a celebrated Ziegfeld Follies beauty who later toured Paris and French gambling casinos, left a final note citing loneliness and insecurity. Police note a modest funeral funded by life insurance. bankbook shows $65.
In Salisbury North Carolina a 3 year old boy Ronnie Bury Smith was pulled from a rain filled septic pit by his uncle Don Smith after the child said Ronnie water. The uncle used learned life saving methods until EMS arrived and the boy was revived at Rowan Memorial Hospital where staff reported he is doing fine.
