Merchants to Get Reward for Collecting Sales Revenue
Raleigh August 11 The ten year old three percent general sales tax has paid the state over 116 million dollars but a 1943 statute allows merchants to deduct three percent of gross receipts as compensation for bookkeeping if total collections are turned in by the 15th of the following month. The revenue department reports July receipts at 1.54 million with merchants sharing about 57 thousand dollars. The bill followed merchants plea for relief after arguing they lose money on the levy. North Carolina, California and Ohio are the only states with off premise food tax exemptions and NC uniquely exempts medicine sold on prescription or compounded by druggists.
