Hershey Sees Unpredictable Draft Outlook Amid War
Los Angeles August 10 Selective Service Director Lewis B Hershey said there are too many imponderables to predict the future of the father draft. He told a House subcommittee that the draft will exhaust all available manpower before targeting fathers and noted California’s rapid wartime industrial growth creates manpower shortages. He defended emergency suspensions for key aircraft workers but warned a balance is needed to keep industry alive. Rep Costello asked if states would call fathers at different times, Hershey said the method is being worked out while non fathers may still exist in labor areas to avoid production cuts.
