An April study from the U S Department of Labor compares wages hours and holidays in western wood furniture plants at High Point Winston Salem and in Hickory Statesville It shows western workers earned roughly one cent more per hour on average but fared worse on vacation benefits The report covers 17 High Point Winston Salem firms about 6000 workers and 39 firms totaling over 8000 workers in Piedmont. 19 Hickory Statesville firms about 8000 workers and 36 firms over 10000 workers shows earnings figures for shaper operators general utility maintenance belt sanders sprayers machine off bearers and more Also covered are holiday and vacation pay life insurance and hospitalization trends across regions

Withholding Tax Plan Outlined for North Carolina
North Carolina outlines new withholding income tax procedures to state revenue agents set to take effect January 1. Employers will deduct taxes from wages as with the federal system, and NC-4 forms will be distributed to employers. Declarations of estimated income become required for those earning from nonwage sources above 200 dollars with quarterly payments due dates April 15, July 15, October 15 and January 15, 1961.
