Soviet Russia's heavy artillery bombarded Japanese lines on Changkufeng Hill with six inch shells at a furious rate, matching World War era bombardments. A village at the hill's base burned fiercely as hundreds of shells struck targets along the front.
Knoxville report says congressional investigators will examine mineral and marble leases tied to Senator Grorse L. Berry and others in the Norris Dam reservoir after a federal commission called the leases commercially worthless. TVA officials Lilienthal and Fly ordered to testify, with Berry ready to appear in Knoxville.
James Brandon of High Point was installed as master councilor of the Carolinas Association of the Order of DeMolay after his election at a business meeting. The two day conclave in Greenville S C selected Greenville as the 1939 conclave city and honored three High Point youths with Chevalier degrees.
In Chicago a seventh gangster style killing in seven weeks is reported as Sam Picciotto, 23, was found shot near the White Sox field. The body, dumped from a car, shows possible robbery motive. Police link Picciotto to Nick Chiciaramonte's circle and probe a possible tie to the Dungan ambush. Continued on page two.
The Japanese steamer Canberra Maru radioed that she was abandoning the search for the missing Hawaii Clipper due to bad weather. En route from Australia to Japan, she had been ordered by the navy on Sunday to alter course to search around Douglas Reef, near the last known position on July 28.
In Jerusalem's old city an Arab was killed, and a Jew and an Arab were wounded in a Tel Aviv to Jaffa shooting. British troops clashed with an armed band east of Nablus, four captured and three wounded, seven rifles seized. Sir Harold MacMichael urged an end to the ruinous murder and sabotage campaign, broadcast to the region as over 200 people have died since July 5.
The state rested its case against Francis M. Carroll charged with strangling Dr. James G. Littlefield. Paul M. Dwyer, serving a life sentence, testified as the other key figure in the case. A dictograph installation at Thomaston Prison aimed to overhear Carroll speaking with Dwyer but failed due to a mix up.
Winston-Salem August 8 The proposed constitutional amendment would move sheriffs from two-year to four-year terms. A J Maxwell Revenue Commissioner told the North Carolina Sheriffs Association that longer terms could improve efficiency and reduce campaign burdens. He noted the historical role of sheriffs and argued for independence from appointive power.
Washington dateline notes three pro Roosevelt senators facing primary tests in Ohio Arkansas and Idaho with Idaho the clearest test of New Deal loyalty. Battles include Pope versus Clark and Caraway against McClellan while Bulkley Taft and Day contest endure. Roosevelt may weigh public stance after results. Local labor groups back George in Georgia.

Gov A B Chandler announced he would depart soon for a northern fishing trip delaying indefinitely a grand jury investigation into his alleged poisoning during the 1948 campaign against Senator Alben Barkley for the Democratic nomination.
Three United States flying fortresses that arrived on a goodwill mission from Miami flew to the Panama Canal Zone at 9 50 a m EST. They had landed Friday after a nonstop flight from Miami and had flown over Bogota during Eduardo Santos's inauguration as president of Colombia.
In Raleigh on August 9 the General Assembly enacted a 75000 appropriation for North Carolina to participate in the 1939 New York World's Fair and moved ahead on PWA funding bills. The Senate approved a second reading of Gold of Guilford's bill to amend election calling and bond issues for sanitary districts, aiding the Trinity Archdale district. House and Senate suspended rules to approve the fair funding measure, while bond bills await House action. Governor Hoey called the legisla.
Gov. A B Chandler was asked to appear before a special Kentucky grand jury investigating reports he and two others were poisoned by tainted water during the Barkley Chandler campaign. Senator Barkley leads Chandler by about 60 000 votes in the Democratic senatorial primary with returns from most precincts.
Parks Alexander of Durham was elected president of the North Carolina Automobile Dealers' Association at the fourth annual convention closing in Greensboro at Sedgefield. He succeeds retiring president I. Atemore of Washington.
Two men died in separate truck crashes near Reidsville last night. Dillard Julian 19 of Wentworth perished from a broken neck after his State Highway Department truck overturned on a detour near Stoneville. Paul Hart of Thomasville died from injuries when his truck skidded and overturned at the same location.
NEW BERN Aug 9 About 500 delegates attended the Slot annual convention of the North Carolina State Firemen's association with business sessions dominating the day. Committees met as the group shifts from yesterday's beach dance to today’s agenda, including a push to seek state legislation for a volunteer department to provide compensation for injuries incurred off municipal duty.
The North Carolina state board of elections reversed an unofficial count and certified C. B. Deane of Rockingham as the Democratic nominee to Congress from the eighth district with 19 182 votes to Burgin 19 159 from the July 2 run off. The board held up filing the certification pending possible appeals and noted hundreds of irregular absentee votes were reviewed in Davidson Montgomery and Wilkes counties.
Lexington based Dakotah Cotton Mills and Ragan Knitting Co of Thomasville share in an $8.5 million government procurement. Dakotah Cotton Mills secures $125,591 in chambray via Turner Halsey Co for the Treasury. Ragan Knitting Co. lands $59,970 for soers with Navy supplies division.
