Williams Faces $5000 Fine for Spitting at Fans
Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox received a $5,000 fine the heaviest in major league history after spitting toward Boston fans following a fielding error in the 11th inning against New York. Club owner Tom Yawkey said he urged the stand against such conduct. Williams, earning $100,000 a year, indicated he might retire and others observed the large crowd of 36,350 watching at Fenway Park. He vowed he would spit again at the same people who booed him.
