Big Brazilian Ship Sunk With 78 Missing

The Brazilian passenger steamer Bage was torpedoed and sunk off Sergipe on July 31. Officials report 78 passengers and crew missing from 129 passengers and 102 crew aboard. South Carolina tobacco growers seek $48 ceiling

Myrtle Beach S C Aug 7 dissatisfied South Carolina tobacco growers will press for a $48 ceiling on the bright leaf crop at a meeting with the Office of Price Administration next week. An earlier $41 ceiling had been set. bids on low grade leaf held up while top grade leaf fell short of expectations. Wesley W Singletary led a group meeting with J B Hutson to seek help from the CCC in Washington. A delegation including Lieut Governor Ransome Williams and A H Williams would confer with OPA officials Monday. The group argues price differences between loose leaf tobacco and graded, tied tobacco justify the higher ceiling.
