French and British forces launch a dawn drive capturing villages and towns east and southeast of Amiens. In the first four hours objectives are reached with woods and towns taken, extending up to three miles in some sectors and German positions reported captured.
Allied forces launched a dawn attack along a 40 to 50 kilometer front between Albert and Montdidier. French and British troops advanced toward Demuin Aubercourt while tanks supported the assault. By midmorning many objectives were taken and prisoners and guns reported, with heavy German resistance around Morisel Mereuil and along the Somme front near Amiens and Ancre valley.
Early reports say British Fourth Army and French First Army launched a broad dawn attack under Field Marshal Haig. The operation targets eastern and southeastern sectors with troops advancing at dawn.
Washington reports no American divisions are currently engaged in the Franco-British offensive south and southeast of Amiens. Units that took Campaigny were withdrawn weeks ago after their initial success. Some American units remain with British forces and may join the new offensive, with a possibility of Americans serving with the French First Army.
The local exemption board issued call number 1134 for 20 men under its jurisdiction. The 29 men represent High Point's quota of 2783 Negroes entraining for Camp Greene in Charlotte from this state during a three day period beginning August 22. All 2788 men are qualified for general service.
The Associated Press reports on August 7 that American forces discovered a grave marked with a wooden cross at the Chanery wood edge near Fere En Tardenois. The inscription reads Lieutenant Roosevelt buried by Germans.
The Confederate Veterans camp announces a Saturday picnic at Comrade A E Guyer’s Greensboro road home four miles from the city. Members and friends are urged to meet in front of The Enterprise office at 1 80 o’clock and bring a small lunch. Citizens with cars to transport veterans are asked to contact Adjutant Dowd or be at the meeting point.
The daily army casualty list includes North Carolina men Private Joseph L. Pearce of Selma died of wounds and Privates Rosier Gouge of Bakersville and Ray P. Rose of New Bern were wounded severely. The marine list names Corporal Fred Black of Charlotte wounded in action. Navy draft extension unlikely per Rear Admiral Palmer as enlistments remain ample.

The American steamship Merak of 2240 tons gross was sunk by a German submarine off Cape Hatteras North Carolina Tuesday night. One small boat with 18 crew members is missing while the captain and 23 sailors have landed at Norfolk. The Merak, former Divch vessel, was carrying coal from an American port to Chile under the United States Shipping Board.
