Hiroshima observed the tenth anniversary with a peace appeal and bells at 8:15 am. Mayor Watanabe urged world leaders to never repeat the tragedy as 50,000 gathered at Nakashima Peace Park for the ceremony. Frederick James Chapman, son of a former Scotland Yard murder squad chief, was charged with murdering his wife Irene Chapman and their infant daughter Irene in their Orpington home. Police found a blood-stained hammer and fireplace poker at the scene after Chapman reported to a Brighton station.

Denied Commission Academy Graduate Sails As Seaman
Eugene W. Landy, honor graduate of the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy, is set to sail as an able bodied seaman aboard the Sun Oil Co tanker Texas Sun on a 30 day voyage to Texas. Landy, 21, graduated near the top of his class but was denied a naval reserve commission because his widow mother was once a Communist. He may reapply for a commission within six months. Landy’s mother, Deborah Landy of Bradley Beach, NJ, says she left the Communist party years ago and praises her son for his loyalty and achievements at the academy.
