President Roosevelt announced a new commercial pact with Soviet Russia obligating it to purchase at least 40 million dollars of American products in the coming year an increase over the prior agreement. The pact took effect August 4 with notes exchanged in Moscow between Ambassador Davies and Soviet foreign affairs official Litvinoff.
In Nanking Aug 6 1944 China tightened wartime measures as air defense groups acquire gas masks and issue safety instructions for gas attack threats. Japanese forces shore up defenses in Hankow while thousands evacuate toward Shanghai by river steamers. U S consul cautioned Americans in Hankow region to seek safer southern locations amid fears hostilities could reach south of the Yellow River.
In Philadelphia a 3.5 pound baby girl was born one minute after mother Mary Boccassini died from tubercular meningitis. The infant, named Alice, was placed in an incubator as doctors warned fever threatened survival.
Secretary Hull announced the law against foreign enlistment of Americans would be applied consistently in any Sino Japanese crisis situation in north China. Tokyo reports say Japan’s Hirota told parliament the United States guards against enlistment of American aviators with Chinese forces. Hull spoke at a press conference after Chinese Ambassador Wang visited to discuss the far eastern crisis.
At Asheville the tenth annual mountain dance and music festival featured the Virginia reel buck and wing and other folk dances drawing an estimated 2000 spectators. Team-dance contests resume tonight with the square-dancing championship of the Southern Appalachians to be crowned Saturday night. A group from Skyline Farms near Scottsboro Alabama travelled 325 miles to participate.
Insurgent Spain's new ambassador Rear Admiral Antonio de Magaz met Adolf Hitler at Der Fuehrer's mountain home and expressed gratitude for Germany's friendship and support toward Francoist Spain.
Jones Brothers and Company of Wilson received the contract to construct the Dunn North Carolina post office for a low bid of 49,445 dollars. The award was announced August 6 as part of a formal bidding process.
Directors and stockholders of the Atlantic and North Carolina railroad will meet September 21 to elect officers. A meeting here yesterday was adjourned until that date at the request of Governor Hoey. The state holds controlling stock in the railroad company.
In Asheville area a electrical storm yesterday caused fire at a tire company plant injuring Ollie Stevenson a Black employee slightly. Damage totaled several thousand dollars with the plant damaged by lightning and fire.
James Sermons, a 29-year-old Georgia man, denies attacking white women but admits seven burglaries and holdups in Winston-Salem. Sheriff Ernie Shore says one victim identified him as the attacker and investigations continue with more victims to be questioned. Sermons, married with six children, worked in hotels in Florida and Georgia before moving to Forsyth County.
Guilford College news notes Quakers condemn legalized liquor sales and plan a broad campaign to oppose expansion of wet counties. The group plans referendums, anti ABC store efforts in Wayne, Guilford, Alamance and Yadkin counties and hosts speakers on liquor control. United States District Court Judge Hayes spoke on liquor control policy as part of the annual meeting themes.
New York trading opens with small volume and mixed trends as mining and specialty issues lead a lethargic session. Motors stay firm while utilities rails and steels edge lower amid modest export copper gains and scrap steel rises in Pittsburgh.
Rocky Mount August 6 A man identified as William F Shumaker of Durham County was held in Nashville jail on charges of highway robbery and assault after Lucillie Bell a 19 year old telephone operator was stabbed on a street yesterday and her purse snatched by a man later described by Police Chief Co P Hedgepeth as Shumaker.
The North Carolina state employment service will operate with 10 district offices instead of 15. Director R Mayne Albright announced the reduction and named Clifford RR Adama of Jonesboro as assistant director. Three field supervisors David R Stowe Richard 8 Proctor and Thomas R Everett were appointed with Stowe a reappointment.
In Los Angeles the jury selection starts for Albert Dyer charged with murdering three Inglewood girls Melba Everett 9 Madeline 7 and Jeannette Stephens 8. Dyer who helped children cross a Centinela Park street is accused of luring them into hills to hunt rabbits then killing and raping their bodies.
Senate action follows a heated debate on assigning administration of the act to the office of Under Secretary Ickes. The division plan clears the way for direct federal housing oversight and shifts authority within the Interior Department.
Nazareth Orphans Home near Salisbury marked its 31st anniversary with a large crowd. Dr. I G Greer of Thomasville delivered the main address on Interpreting Christianity, stressing service and Christian principles. John W Peeler Rockwell was named board president for the 14th term with John T Fesperman Kannapolis as vice president and Rev W C Lyerly Greensboro as secretary for the 14th year. George H Moose Gold Hill was named treasurer for the 26th term.

The Senate passed a modified Wagner housing bill today and sent it to the House for action.
The senate voted 40 to 37 after a heated debate to place administration of the Wagner Housing act under Secretary Ickes interior department with general supervision over the program.
Robert R. Young testified before the senate railroad finance committee that donating 150 Democratic convention books was misinterpreted and that the $15 000 gift was not meant to influence investigators. He denied any improper motives and explained the books cost about $20 each while the remaining funds would go to the party.
George Exum, 28, of Wayne County was executed by gas at the state prison for killing his aunt Obelia Exum last December. Originally six slated for execution, appeals and commutations left Exum as the sole inmate to die today. He confessed, the death chamber was used at 10 20, and the sentence was carried out after a 10 minute 49 second process.
A collision near Charlotte, North Carolina killed a woman and seriously injured several others. Dead is Mrs. M. C. Roberson of Washington D C. Others fatally or seriously injured include R Roberson of Washington and Miss Stella Lowder of North Carolina with multiple injuries. Additional injured are M. C. Roberson Jr of Washington and Mr and Mrs T M Douglas and Mrs R E Campbell of Charlotte.
