Berlin endures a strained incident as Russia eases its financial siege while Western envoys pursue terms from Stalin. In Washington President Truman voices hope for peace and the outlawing of atomic weapons, without detailing ongoing Moscow negotiations.
Alger Hiss testified he never joined the Communist party to the House Un American Activities Committee. Whittaker Chambers, a Time editor and former Communist, testified Hiss led a prewar Red underground in Washington, a claim Hiss disputed. President Truman called Congress red herring politics, accusing hearings of inflaming inflation and slandering people. He spoke at a news conference and urged broader inquiry at the Capitol.
The tortured body of George A. Red Smyth, 28, a tunnel gang member, was found stuffed in the trunk of a 1948 Lincoln convertible near Naperville Road, 30 miles southwest of Chicago. He had been shot three times, with a rope loop and tape marks, and identification was confirmed by fingerprints. Smyth, once arrested by Chicago police, was last of the tunnel gang involved in currency exchanges.

The eight percent wage increase pattern spreads from Dan River mills in Danville Virginia to other Southern textile mills under the CIO Textile Workers Union. Roy Lawrence reports Cone and Erwin Mills in North Carolina adopt the hike. Greensboro, Gibsonville, Reidsville, Haw River, Pineville, Durham, Cooleemee, Erwin and two Georgia mills Cedar Town and Albany receive boosts. Burlington Mills notes the pattern but cites diverse fibers and cannot issue a general wage statement yet.
In Oxford on August 5 a three wheel automobile priced under $800 will enter production. C. D. Gill heads the Tri Wheel Corporation of Oxford to manufacture the vehicle designed for quick city delivery. The two cylinder air cooled car reaches 40 mph with one front seat and two rear seats for three passengers. Initial output aims for about one unit monthly with strong orders anticipated.
AP analysis notes a Western European push toward a confederation of democracies driven by fear of communism. Italy’s Count Sforza pledges political sovereignty curtailment for unity and French Foreign Minister Reynaud seeks Britain’s autumn backing. The bloc forms with Britain, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg joining earlier and aligned with the Marshall plan support.
The United States urged an 11 nation Danube commission including Austria Bulgaria Czechoslovakia Hungary Romania Ukraine Russia Yugoslavia France the United States and Britain to ensure free navigation and shared control. The Soviet plan would confine rights to Danube states excluding Austria until a peace treaty, restricting access for nonmembers. Cannon criticized Russian aims as inadequate for open navigation and urged UN involvement for future disputes.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council condemned legal measures against mixed marriages. The committee approved 12 to 0 with six abstentions a Canadian compromise between Chilean and Soviet proposals. The resolution deplored all legislation preventing marriages between people of different color nationality race or religion. Chile urged condemnation of laws against mixed marriages between persons of different nationality. The Soviet counter proposal condemned laws against mixed marriages between persons of different color.
Communities along the French Broad river receded and weather forecasters predict a period of fair and cooler weather.
North Carolina reports a July rise in the general fund to 8.399 million and highway fund income of 4.136 thousand while the security fund holds 147.237 million. TVA power sales added 102 thousand for the year ending June 30, and income tax increased for the first time since April.
The Metropolitan Opera will not operate next season after failing to reach an agreement with unions over wage increases. Officials cite a large deficit and argue further production-cost demands would be imprudent. Local 802 AFL Musicians protested, noting they dropped wage demands but seek employment insurance and old-age benefits.
The House approved a Republican anti inflation bill 264 to 97, returning wartime price controls and curbing bank credit while boosting federal gold reserves. President Truman critics warn of a veto as the Senate rushes to act and adjourn.
Raleigh August 5 Fourteen states health board reported 27 new infantile paralysis cases today raising the yearly total to 1199. Guilford county residents added two deaths bringing the annual polio death toll to 65. Buncombe Durham Catawba Gaston counties each reported multiple cases with others listed.
Prices remained firm across the Carolinas flue-cured border belt with heavy offerings. Darlington noted better quality than last year, Whiteville and other markets echoed the trend, Kingstree saw a $75 high on a basket as clearing weather aided harvest and curing amid some weather damage.
