William An dies at age 78, a former judge on the New York State Court of Appeals. In San Francisco, Jesse H. Jones records a full recovery from an influenza attack after checking into a hotel.
In Washington on August 5 the AFL executive council delayed action amid a heated dispute led by David Dubinsky over charges that unions in John L. Lewis’s committee for industrial organization plotted insurrection. Green said the council would likely suspend the Lewis faction unless terms were met, while Dubinsky argued only the AFL convention could act.
Fort Worth report notes Bobby Erdies aged 42 once a lightweight challenger is confined here almost blind since 1924 and now treated for tuberculosis.

In Brockport New York on August 5 1938 Justice Homer D Benedict ordered the mongrel dog Ida Ho confined to its owner until October 1 1938 after a verdict that death is the penalty of freedom for the alleged murder of a swimming boy.
In Brockport New York Idaho a half grown mongrel pup faced a life trial for the drowning of a boy swimmer. After a half hour with flashlights and a crowd in the village hall the dog dozed off during the proceedings. Idaho wagged a greeting when his 22 year old owner Victor Fortune testified and had been kept in a Rochester kennel for observation.
Washington August 5 P It reports a Pendergast backed Maj Lloyd C Stark leading Missouri Democratic governor race with wide margin while Kansas Townsendite contest and Barrett win Republican nomination dominate Midwest vote counting. Missouri precincts total 3096.
The city council debated electrical signage and closing Broad street between Main and Wrenn this morning. Highland Motors sought a neon sign, noting nearby rivals already have signs. The zoning rule prohibiting signs was cited, and nonconforming signs were discussed. The ordinance was repealed to allow study, with committees tasked to draft a new electrical sign ordinance.
A 26 year old Negro named Leroy Le grand was held by police in Washington after being identified from a broadcast description as a suspect wanted by Asheboro North Carolina for questioning in the June 8 slaying of Boyd Crisco. The arrest occurred in the downtown area by a detective who recognized him.
Detroit August 5 Charles T. McCutcheon a city bacteriologist discharged for not reporting an approach by the Black Legion says he was forced to join the secret society three years ago and lived in fear. He described being questioned about infecting dairy products with typhoid germs, including milk and cottage cheese delivered to “class enemies.”
Jesse Owens won the 200 meters in 20.7 seconds to set a world record and capture his third Olympic title at Berlin. Ralph Metcalfe finished second and Mack Robinson tied the former Olympic record of 21.1 seconds. The win made Owens the first Olympic triple champion since Paavo Nurmi.
W C Johnson, after a two year service and a prior sergeant promotion, becomes captain by City Council action. The ordinance change ends the captain of detectives post and creates captain of police. Johnson will act as first assistant to Police Chief W G Friddle and work mainly at night earning 160 a month.
A new indictment is sought against John B. Farnsworth former naval officer accused of disclosing defense secrets to Japan. Assistant U. S. Attorney Samuel F. Beach presented three witnesses to a D C federal grand jury seeking conspiracy to deliver confidential naval information to Japanese agents. Farnsworth was previously indicted on delivering and attempting to deliver a secret navy publication The Service of Information and Security.
Miss Mary W. Dewson said Mrs. Curtis Bok of Philadelphia who registered Republican and voted for Hoover in 1932 will work for the re election of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In Greensboro on August 5, Judge Wilson Warlick sentences two men to a year each for robbing a service station after an all night tour of several counties. He scolds blaming liquor for crimes and says such acts have already harmed liquor’s reputation.
More than 2,000 residents registered for a special election on adding a ninth month to the school term in Thomasville. Challenge day is August 8 with voting on August 10. Absentee ballots will be allowed. A 15 cent levy per $100 property value is proposed to fund the extra month.
Two Russian fliers bound for Moscow prepared for a hazardous polar flight over the Arctic. The take-off from San Pedro was scheduled amid cautious plans and weather considerations for the long route.
Athens reports a temporary dictatorship under John Metaxas as martial law is proclaimed to prevent a Communist backed general strike. The government dissolves the chamber of deputies, bans elections, imposes censorship, and bars 14 Communist lawmakers from power while promising new elections when stable.
Governor Bibb Graves announced that miners and Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad Co have agreed on a four month trial of an incentive pay plan. About 2 300 miners are to return to work after violence and a long stoppage in iron ore hills near Birmingham.
PORT SAID Egypt Aug 5 Ras Imru Ethiopian commander in the northwest reportedly advances on Dessye and Addis Ababa with 40000 warriors. Ethiopian columns move from the west toward the capital along the mountain road while several Italian outposts are said to have been destroyed.
The Rev Charles E Coughlin forwards to Frederick L Jenckes an acceptance of a 25000 wager on Lemke versus Landon for Rhode Island votes in the November 1936 election. He notes the Rhode Island mass meeting pledged the sum and that if the National Union wins, proceeds will aid Greek children.
Richardson Realty Inc of Greensboro is revealed as the cash buyer of the Security National bank building for 250000. G G Gallaway of Charlotte represented the purchaser at a public auction. the deed was drawn in John D Biggs's office with a 250000 certified check from Guaranty Trust NY. The buyers own Piedmont Building in Greensboro and expect no policy changes at the local bank. Judge Hayes said a likely October 1 dividend for depositors may follow, enabling payoff of a Reconstruction Finance Corp loan due 1938.
