Judge Reaffirms Integration Plan for Charlotte Schools
U S District Judge James B McMillan reasserted his plan to desegregate Charlotte Mecklenburg elementary schools by busing, granting the school board leeway on details. The decision, after three weeks of testimony, allowed a minority or mixed plan, with a noon Friday deadline to choose. The HEW plan was deemed inadequate for this case, though some of its community support elements were adopted. Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools is North Carolina’s largest district with about 84 000 pupils.
