Pasadena AP reports Mariner 7 closes to within 400000 miles of Mars for its sharpest pictures yet. Despite two malfunctions and imperfect processing, scientists plan to show 31 images early and again after processing. Mars appears barren with no signs of earthlike life.
President Nixon told congressional leaders another contingent of U S troops will likely be withdrawn from Vietnam beginning this month. Senator Dirksen said Nixon spoke of a possible 25 000 man replacement with South Vietnamese troops taking over as Americans depart. Mansfield noted a shift toward Asia only bearing external aggression would trigger U S intervention. Twenty two congress members attended the briefing with Vice President Agnew.
Nixon's Romania trip drew strong emphasis in Romanian outlets with Scinteia and Romania Libera running major front page treatment. Belgrade and Hungarian papers praised the reception or noted caution, while Polish and Soviet media offered limited coverage. A Bulgarian professor urged tighter bloc economic ties and expanded trade with Romania.
Pacifist Rennie Davis announced the release of three U S war prisoners held over a year. Names given were Wesley L Rumble 26 of Oroville California Robert F Irishman 29 of Santee California and Douglas B Hegdahl of Watertown New Jersey. Davis said they were in excellent condition and that an elbow operation had been successful. He said the group would travel via the ICC to Vientiane Laos leaving Hanoi Tuesday. Davis and four other U S fliers not released were described in good condition.
Defense Minister Moshe Dayan urged Israel to press an offensive against Egyptian forces along the Suez Canal while warning against engaging Soviet advisers. He emphasized selective action to breach the cease-fire, cited U.S. aims to avoid a wider war, and warned against foreign troops fighting with Arab forces. Labor leaders proposed keeping Gaza, the Golan Heights, and southern Sinai.
A massive explosion ripped through Noel Missouri injuring more than 40 and killing a 47 year old beauty parlor operator. A railroad car wheel crashed into a home and a 12 500 gallon propane tank risked further disaster. Officials evacuated the town as responders from several states aided the scene.
