Hijackers Nabbed After Boeing 707 Crisis
A father and son, Leon Bearden and Cody Bearden, hijacked a Continental Airlines 707 from Los Angeles to Houston en route to Havana. Border Patrolman Leonard Gilman knocked Bearden to the deck with a single blow after a nine hour standoff. Gilman was injured. Bearden and his son were bound over to a federal grand jury on $200000 bonds. FBI Chief Hoover noted Bearden had earlier visited the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City. The hijacked plane landed in El Paso for refueling after fuel concerns and the crew and passengers were unharmed except for two crew members briefly roughed up.
