Colonel Crawford fuels Kraut term for German fighters
The Fifth Army in Italy sees the rise of Krauts as a popular label among American troops. Lt. Col. Joe Crawford of Humboldt, Kansas, commands an infantry regiment and has pushed the nickname from Anzio through Tunisia, with Stars and Stripes adopting Krauts in headlines. The term replaces Jerry and Heinies, while Tedeschi remains used by some newcomers. The regiment records show missions to kill Krauts and capture Krauts.
