The District of Columbia started collecting a sales tax today with a tiered rate schedule. Charges up to 13 cents are untaxed, 14 to 63 cents pay 1 cent, 64 cents to $1.13 pay 2 cents, and each extra 50 cents adds 1 cent. Meals over $1.25 and transient hotel rooms are taxed.
