Italo Ethiopian peace formula viewed as possible as business enters a strong start for a big winter. The Franklin county lynching probe opened with about 400 spectators as witnesses testified about the Roosevelt Ward case. No evidence linked anyone to the lynching though authorities questioned witnesses, including Solicitor Bickett and Attorney General Seawell, while Dr. H. G. Perry suggested Ward may have been narcotized.
Seven men arrested in the Carolinas face counterfeiting charges. Jimmy Ross, alleged ring leader, and Willie A West with others were detained in Greenville South Carolina. W Herbert Faust in Roanoke Rapids and Everett Randolph Edney in Asheville. Ross held on $10 000 bond. others for smaller amounts.

Durham August 1 Dr Ralph McDonald Forsyth County legislator and 1936 gubernatorial candidate urged a New Deal for North Carolina criticizing Governor Ehringhaus and the tax system calling it the most unbalanced in the nation He spoke at a Kiwanis luncheon defending Roosevelt policies and warned the state faces a crossroads needing reform to fund schools and curb wealthy influence and cement profits through political machines.
The Soviet government seeks to raise the sunken wartime sub B-3, an 18 year old U boat sunk during Baltic Fleet maneuvers in the Gulf of Finland. All aboard perished, 10 000 roubles awarded to each victim family, mass funeral planned at Kronstadt.

Washington August 1 The House and Senate conferees on the AAA amendment bill tentatively agreed after rapid discussion to a framework for final language. Leaders expected a quick completion as talks continued.
John R. J. Reynolds Jr. is announced as the second son in the Reynolds family in Winston-Salem with AP reporting the birth.
Pravda the Communist party organ issued an appeal by the Seventh Communist Internationale urging workers to form a united front to prevent imperialistic war and turn potential conflict into civil strife. It warned fascist cannons are charged and warned of imminent new war.

A provisional report from the state board of health shows North Carolina infant death rate increasing from 66.0 per 1000 live births in 1983 to 76.3 in 1934. Births totaled 79,556 with 6,072 deaths under one year. Only four states had higher mortality. The birth rate rose to 24.1 in 1934 from 23 in 1933. Utah matched NC's birth rate. New Mexico led with 27.9.
