In Phenix City Alabama an all white Russell Circuit Court jury acquitted Gussie Lee Patterson of assault with intent to murder a white taxicab driver after a dispute over fare. Patterson allegedly drew a knife when the driver demanded extra pay beyond the $1 fare for a three mile ride. The driver testified Patterson refused to pay and brandished a knife at his throat. City officials noted the proper fare was 85 cents.
