Shanghai dispatch says Communist columns reached Teching 23 miles north of Hangchow and within 23 miles of Hangchow. Hangchow residents told to leave, militia in police duties, shops closed as garrison notes withdrawals and artillery fire heard nearby. No official confirmation.
Industry records a weekly production of 386 cars and trucks with 1949 total near 1,935,000 units, surpassing four months since 1941. Polk & Co. projects January-March registrations around 900,000, up from 836,409 last year. Dealers report April sales above March with expectations of May and June higher.
