General Motors served a termination of contract notice on the United Auto Workers. The notice becomes effective at midnight May 29 when the current three year contract ends. GM hopes to reach a new agreement within 30 days and discusses extending the current contract if desirable.
The 21 to 12 vote split in the General Assembly of the Southern Presbyterian Church prompted a clash over two reports on racial matters. The majority urged abolishing the council for racial activity and allowing public classroom use of church buildings if states abandon public schools. Virginia presbyteries asked for rulings. Dr. James A. Millard Jr. hesitated on becoming stated clerk as the assembly awaited his reply. More on page two.
Governor Hodges and a 60 member North Carolina delegation pitched the state to Chicago business leaders. He highlighted labor supply climate taxes resources and a strong educational and recreational base within 500 miles of much of the U S. Hodges framed NC as a place to work live and expand industry.
Denver accorded senior military medical expert Col Paul A Campbell proposes using a space satellite as a floating lab 200 miles above earth to study weightlessness on heart blood vessels urinary bladder and on plant growth in gravity. He cites a trained medical scientist as observer and observed for astronautics research.
Cape Canaveral reports the Navy Vanguard rocket failed to ignite its third stage, plunging into the Atlantic after a 1500 mile flight. The mission carried a 20 inch sun X ray instrument sphere and yielded some data, while the first two stages operated as planned and the first Vanguard satellite remains in an egg shaped orbit.
President Nasser lands in Moscow aboard a TU104 with MiG escort for an 18 day UAR Soviet state visit. He is greeted with full military honors by Premier Khrushchev and Kremlin leaders and tours Red Square before a 10 day 5000 mile Soviet tour. A joint solidarity declaration and talks with Soviet officials are planned. He stops in Budapest en route for breakfast with Hungarian leaders.
Moscow Foreign Minister Gromyko called Eisenhower's Arctic inspection plan "sheer publicity" and said the U S proposal aims for intelligence on Soviet territory. In New York, the U N Security Council debated referring the plan to a summit, with the Soviet side opposing rapid discussion of disarmament and inspections.
In the Bay area crusade opening, Billy Graham drew 14,500 to the first night meeting at Cow Palace with 2,000 empty seats. 302 people came forward to decide for Christ. The six week crusade began Sunday in a 16,500 capacity hall that was filled and 18,000 inside.
The Associated Press reports scattered minor river flooding across eastern and central North Carolina after sustained rainfall. Forecasts show crest levels on the Cape Fear near 18 feet at Moncure and 35 feet at Fayetteville, with rising levels on the Neuse and Tar rivers and elevated rivers in Asheville and Greensboro.
North Carolina expects an above average peach harvest with 89 percent of normal production on April 1 and 23 percent above the 1947-56 average. The South reports the best April 1 peach condition since 1945 and second highest in 34 years, while wheat is forecast 11 percent below the 10-year average due to freezes.
In Bloomington Indiana Mrs James Bough 95 wed 29 year old Laura Belle Wilson at a ceremony rushed to avoid TV cameras. The Democrat couple planned a brief honeymoon drive after a crowd of 200 applauded at the hotel reception. Mrs Bough quipped this would be her last wedding and hinted at future travel to Johnston City Illinois and perhaps Miami Beach Florida.
Washington reports growing pressure in Congress to cut taxes as labor seeks relief and Democrats signal urgency. Eisenhower and Secretary Anderson oppose immediate tax cuts while economists advise shifting from public works to general rate reductions to boost employment. lawmakers face a June 30 deadline as House negotiates bill timing potentially pushing final action to July.
Pvt. Isaiah Andrews, 19, Newark New Jersey, charged with premeditated murder in the barracks shooting of Sgt. Paul E. Grant at Camp Lejeune. The general court martial follows a hearing after Grant had accused Andrews of disrespect. Grant’s widow and mother are named, and the case includes psychiatric examination of Andrews.
Isaac Costner, 62, once jailed for a 1934 Charlotte mail truck robbery, is sent to 41 months for operating an Ohio moonshine plant. He previously testified in the Touhy gang cases and in the Factor kidnapping trial, denying Touhy involvement in the robbery.
