Fossil Collector Major Contributor To Smithsonian
Peter Harmatuk, a 56 year old plant manager from Brigeton North Carolina, became a leading fossil collector after his son found a shark tooth in the Neuse River. The Smithsonian credits him with significant advances in coastal plain paleontology and recognizes him as a principal vertebrate fossil collector. He ships finds to Washington for study and has fossils dated from 14,000 years to 60 million years old, from sites in Duplin Beaufort and Jones counties and near the Texas Gulf Lee Creek mine.
