Kentucky Tornadoes Kill 10 Across Three Counties

Three tornadoes carved an 80 mile path through south central Kentucky killing 10 people and injuring over 100. Adair, Russell and Butler Warren counties bore the heaviest damage as cars hung in trees and streets filled with floodwater. The U S Corps of Engineers began damage assessments as officials estimated losses in the millions.

Tornado Toll Reaches Multiple Kentucky Towns

Guard helicopters were deployed for a regional area tour though state leaders had not placed National Guard on alert. Civil defense director William L. Walter described victims found at several sites with two women and a child among the casualties. Nancy Powell, 71, reported her Dun n home was leveled by tornado winds. The Weather Service logged a first touchdown near South Hill Bowling Green at 10:20 p.m with additional touchdowns near Cane Valley and Russell Springs in the Columbia area.

Protesters jailed after blocking draft HQ entrance

About 200 antiwar activists were arrested in Washington DC for blocking the main entrance of the Selective Service System building. Demonstrators laid down as a symbol of war deaths while others handed out leaflets at the IRS. Final Realignment Vote Set By North Carolina House

The North Carolina House prepared for final action on a bill realigning the 11 congressional districts to reflect 1970 census figures. The measure, approved 80-18 last Tuesday, would move only 10 districts and keep incumbents in separate districts. The Senate had passed the bill about two months earlier.
