Two economists forecast a real fall in inflation by autumn despite a six year low stock market. Walter W. Heller and Beryle W. Sprinkel told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that price rises would ease, even as Dow fell 12.14 points to 735.15 and concerns grew over a sagging economy.
Ford reports a 5 percent fall in first quarter sales while GM declines 14 percent. Nixon meets with the Council of Economic Advisers and other economists to review the economy. A California bank lowers its prime rate from 8 to 7.5 percent, hoping for a broader rate cut. Rep. Robert N C Nix predicted quick passage of a landmark obscenity bill defining nudity sexual conduct and sadomasochistic abuse as obscene to minors. The ACLU opposed citing free speech concerns while the bill could carry up to five years in jail and a $5000 fine for first offense.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, led by Chairman J. W. Fulbright, opposed any U.S. arms aid to Cambodia after a briefing by Secretary of State Rogers. Senator George Aiken supported the committee view, while Rogers said Cambodia had urged military hardware to outfit a large army.
A Senate hearing revealed a large request for rifles trucks half tracks and planes but not personnel. Fulbright said the administration has not decided to expand aid beyond what is already done and discussed options including UN involvement and potential public support for Cambodia without full congressional approval.
