Thirty five American soldiers freed from Communist camps left Tokyo on a C-97 transport for Honolulu and San Francisco in the first leg of Operation Freedom. Eight were on stretchers. all traveled homeward amid Army bands and hospital sendoff.
Progress at the 5600 acre Coweeta Hydrological Laboratory near Franklin occupies watershed scientists and foresters this week. They meet daily, with mornings in offices and afternoons in the field, starting yesterday and continuing through Friday.
The Asheville chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management will host a Friday dinner for 26 industries that have entered the Western North Carolina region since 1948. Publisher Don S. Mrs. Charles Harris aged 18 died in a hospital four hours after she poured kerosene on a fire at her Dudley residence. The incident occurred yesterday in Goldsboro.
Raleigh reports the State Highway Commission opened bids on 232 miles of road work across 25 counties. Low bids will be reviewed at a meeting Thursday.
Second Lt. William Norman Cowan Jr. died in an Army training accident at Fort Bragg when a tank toppled a tree and ran over him. He was 1952 West Point graduate and son of Lt. Col. W N Cowan Sr of Forest Hills Hickory. Survived by his wife Elaine of Fort Bragg.
Republican Leader Taft of Ohio demands continuous day and night sessions over the submerged lands bill unless opponents set a definite final vote date. He cites ongoing filibuster tactics and hints sessions could continue this week if no agreement is reached. Senator Morse accuses Taft of forcing a filibuster.
Tokyo reports the first batch of 35 sick and wounded American war prisoners to be flown home. The list includes Cpl Lione E Peterson from Wisconsin Marine Pfe Arthur G Gregory of Illinois and many others from across the United States Puerto Rico and the Canal Zone with ranks from private to sergeant and airman. The names span multiple states and cities including New York California Texas Missouri and Nebraska with diverse hometowns.
Raleigh report shows House Speaker E. T. Best creating a calendar committee chaired by Rep. William W. Taylor Jr. to fast track bills toward adjournment. Senate approved the revenue measure on third reading, removing a consolidated return option for corporations. House also backed a Dare County local measure to vote on banning beer and wine in two townships.
Aboard the U S aircraft carrier Bennington off Guantanamo Bay 11 American sailors were killed and four injured in a boiler accident. Names of the dead and injured were withheld pending next of kin notifications. The Essex class ship, 27 000 tons, was operating near Cuba when the incident occurred yesterday. The ship was later moved to the base docks as Navy officials awaited further word.
Navy planes from Task Force 77 bombed targets in Eastern Korea as truce talks continued at Panmun. Valley Forge and Princeton aircraft hit Tanchon and Sopo, destroying supply dumps and at least eight trucks. South Korean and Chinese forces clashed near Outpost Texas with 21 Chinese killed, while a major skirmish on the eastern front left 15 North Koreans dead.

U N negotiators at Panmunjom pressed the Communists to propose a specific prisoner exchange to break the stalemate. Lt Gen William K Harrison warned the Reds they must state a concrete plan or risk breaking off talks. The talks stalled over neutral custody for prisoners and timeframes after an armistice.
North Carolina senators Hoey and Smith urged a Senate Appropriations subcommittee to provide at least two million dollars for the Soco Gap three mile section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. They cited 3,374,962 last year and 2,293,000 Smoky Mountain visitors who would access the park from the completed link, noting six million needed to finish three gaps and that thirty seven million will be spent by June 30.
Chairman Gordon Dean of the Atomic Energy Commission said he hopes the full story of the atomic bomb can be told someday. He noted secrecy remains in force and offered no timeline, in a letter to Dr. Norris E. Bradbury on Los Alamos lab's 10th anniversary.
Mrs. Clare Boothe Luce, new American ambassador to Italy, presented her credential copy to Premier Alcide de Gasperi at the foreign office with U S Minister Elbridge Durbrow. The meeting revived a friendship dating to 1947, recalled by de Gasperi who had met Luce in Cleveland that year.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a resolution calling for federal participation in a 50th anniversary observance of the Wright brothers first powered flight at Kitty Hawk. Sen. John M.
