A Southern Pacific New Orleans bound Argo passenger train derailed after striking a broken rail at Guasti four miles east of Ontario California. Thirty six people were injured three seriously as eight cars derailed or toppled while the locomotive and several cars stayed on track. False Arrest Suit Filed As Result Of State Test
A four state civil rights test by interracial groups led to a false arrest suit in Durham North Carolina after three men were released without charge. The journey by 16 travelers including eight blacks aimed to test the 1946 Supreme Court ruling on interstate travel. Arrests occurred on buses in Virginia North Carolina and in Asheville and Chapel Hill North Carolina and in Petersburg Amherst and Culpepper Virginia with mixed white and black defendants. In Asheville two men drew 30 day sentences under Jim Crow law with an appeal set for May 19. Trials in other cases are planned in the coming weeks with appeals if needed. Three Escapees Captured After Letterman Breakout
Three of four dangerous men who escaped from Letterman hospital were recaptured by authorities in San Francisco. The fourth escapee Frank R. Wallrath remains at large along with hospital orderly Wallace Williams, as search efforts continue. The four inmates overpowered orderlies, opened doors with keys, and fled from the psychopathic ward at 2 a.m. after assaulting staff. Wallrath, a former paratrooper, had a war crimes record and was sentenced to death later commuted to life.
