In Rappahonnock Virginia on April 28 P Db Kelly 41 a Richmond electrician and Waynesville native sacrificed his life to save his 16 year old son Donald. With a broken ankle cast he dived into the river and kept the boy's head above water until a row boat arrived. Donald’s fishing line snagged in Kelly’s clothing and the father disappeared as searchers found his body ten feet deep. The boy said his father knew he could not be saved and gave his life to save him.
In Los Angeles on April 28 Jackie Coogan, once a child star known as The Kid, reveals only 545,924 left from an alleged 4 million earnings. A court receiver’s report shows most earnings, except real estate, dissipated amid his suit against his mother Lillian Bernstein and stepfather Arthur Bernstein.

Elwyn Gibbon of Seattle was freed by Japanese police after six days of detention for questioning in connection with his ties to the Chinese air force. The public prosecutor said no charges would be filed since Gibson was a foreign citizen and had ceased fighting for the Chinese.
London reports the Prime Minister and Premier Daladier reached full agreement on all points after day one of their Anglo French world policy review. The two day talks aim for closer cooperation of all powers and will resume tomorrow with guests including Daladier and Georges Bonnet visiting Windsor.
Washington April 28 The Supreme Court heard arguments on whether athletic contests at state universities are a state function and if the federal government may impose a 1 percent admission tax on intercollegiate football games and similar events.
