The U S navy reports the World War era destroyer Sturtevant was sunk off the Florida coast by an underwater explosion within the past 24 hours. Loss of life was small and most crew reached port safely, with next of kin being notified.
DeWitt MacKenzie reports that subjugated peoples may rise in revolt as the war nears a defining battle. Underground networks and Allied broadcasts have spurred a potential uprising within six weeks, with sabotage and resistance urged across France Belgium Norway Holland and Eastern Europe. The timing remains conjectural as authorities warn of possible bloody chaos but a union of civilian action is anticipated.
Retail sugar sales stop at midnight as a one week freeze begins. Sales resume May 35 on rationing basis with stamps issued for May 5-16, May 17-30, May 31-June 13, and June 14-27. Restaurants and others get 30 percent of May 1941 usage, bakers and industry 70 percent, industrial consumers about 50 percent of last year’s consumption. Industrial and institutional users to register tomorrow and Wednesday.
“Except for the tubercle bacillus as the cause of tuberculosis, no other factor is more commonly associated with the disease than poverty,” states Dr. M. J. Bonner, chair of the committee of the North Carolina Association.
In Chungking on April 27 the Chinese army announced recapture of Hopong increasing the line toward Mandalay from the southeast. Hopong lies about 10 miles east of Tsunggyi and roughly 100 miles southeast of Mandalay. Allied bombers attacked Japanese bases at Lae and Bougainville, and a Japanese offensive against Port Moresby was repelled. Observers note American troops landed on New Caledonia as a potential check on Japanese eastward expansion, with fears of a major naval clash between Hawaii and New Zealand brewing.
London dispatch reports the Berlin correspondent of Baseler Zeitung cabled that Germans were astonished at Hitler's demand for far reaching powers. The Basel paper noted it as the sharpest appeal yet to the German people and said Berlin was surprised by his silence on past German successes and lack of usual predictions.
At Kuibyshev the German and Russian armies clash in small scale but fierce fighting along a thawing front. London reports a spring offensive with heavy Finnish casualties and a Red Army push toward Finland, likened to a prior decisive spring attack.
Reports from the fighting line 630 miles away say both sides are massing large reserves as the German air force pounds Leningrad for a third day and the Red Army maintains its position.
Washington reports sabotage by Nazi sympathizers halted Brewster Aeronautical Corp, delaying bomber deliveries. Loyal American employees alerted Congress and Frank Knox, prompting tougher oversight. Deliberate specification errors and derailed parts slowed assembly as foremen urged workers to prolong the job.
London April 27 Adolf Hitler proclaimed himself supreme master of Germany with power above Nazi law. The Reichstag approved his demand for absolute obedience after he addressed the uniformed Reichswehr, amid signs of deep internal trouble following a near-catastrophe this winter.
RALEIGH April 27 Two more state guard units the 32nd of North Wilkesboro and the 33rd of Lenoir were called into active duty to patrol highways search for arsonists and assist in fighting fires as Western North Carolina forests burn. Four other units remain on duty Morganton Shelby Asheville Waynesville. A major blaze roars in the Pauses Cove area destroying sawmills and worker shacks while Mount Mitchell threats were checked but require watch as roots smolder deeper. Fire control chief says only a soaking rain can improve conditions.
British bombers blasted Rostock for the fourth night, targeting the Heinkel factory as fires raged from prior attacks. RAF forces also hit Dunkerque airfields, mined German waters, and struck northern France while daylight raids backed the campaign.
British submarines in the central Mediterranean sank four Axis ships carrying Rommel’s North Africa materiel. Malta air raids damaged Malta hospital wards and Red Cross areas, with casualties and POW camp hits reported. RAF raids targeted Libya’s El Agheila and Agedabia regions as air activity surged across the region.
The War Department reported artillery from Corregidor Fortress dispersed a Japanese troop concentration on the Bataan Peninsula and set fire to enemy motor trucks. Corregidor and Fort Hughes faced dive bomber attacks while Japanese artillery shelled Corregidor for hours. A Hudson River tube train derailment at Exchange Place Jersey City killed four and injured 262. Motorman Louis Vierhbuchen, 48, Newark, was charged with manslaughter. investigators probe cause as power lines cut and tunnel filled with fumes. Dead include Anna Stevens of Woodhaven and Rube Greenberg of Brooklyn. 160 treated and released from Jersey City Medical Center.
President Roosevelt said no American should net more than 23000 a year after taxes and proposed wage stabilization and price ceiling measures to curb living costs. He urged repeal of farm price protections, taxation of state bonds, and keeping the 40 hour week with overtime pay. He plans a radio address to explain the plan amid a White House conference.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. April 27. Rumor has caused jitters among furniture manufacturers, but Seidman and Seidman say the uneasiness is unwarranted. Wire springs are scarce, yet demand for products is rising. February and March new business up 16 and 3 percent from 1941, shipments down 12 percent from February and 20 percent from March 1941. Firms can fulfill existing orders in about five weeks. Employment fell 2 percent to the March 1942 level.
