British bombers hit the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in Brest, possibly forcing their temporary removal from the Atlantic battle. The ships’ speed firepower and armor make them a deadly menace, and their loss would simplify Allied convoy operations though ships’ survivability under air attack remains debated.

28 Year Fugitive Now Preacher Is Taken In Atlanta
Atlanta April 26. A Free Methodist preacher arrested while planning to surrender after 28 years as a fugitive awaits return to Iowa where a 12 year sentence was imposed for wife slaying. Rev Charles Arthur Higby, gray-haired and tearful, spoke of 25 years evangelism since escaping Anamosa reformatory in 1913. He says he never hid, visited police stations, and planned clemency talks after a confession of killing his wife over alleged attentions to another man with black curly hair. He was converted in 1936 in an Atlanta church and began preaching the same year. His wife stood near him as he awaited transfer. He claims to have intended to surrender and asked Charlotte detectives to confirm his wanted status before his arrest yesterday in Atlanta for presenting a letter at a post office. He insisted he still planned to return to Iowa.
