Halifax Booms as Empire War Machine Drives City
Halifax, April 26, 1942. Halifax prospers as war mobilization accelerates. Merchants report record business while new housing, rent controls, and food measures expand to meet wartime demand. Population swells by about 50 percent with servicemen from Allied nations. Vast dock and rail improvements speed war materials to Britain, and citizens fund war efforts through War Savings, Red Cross, and Queen's Canadian Fund. Soldiers and sailors stay with local families, and Atlantic defenses remain vigilant with Royal Canadian Air Force patrols and naval traffic.
