Democrats Lead In City Registration For May 6 Election
Voters streamed into polling places as High Point added about 1,500 names to the new city registration. Indications from reliable sources show near 8,500 total registrants with roughly 6,000 Democrats, about 2,000 Republicans, and 500 Independents. Republicans claim many joined Democrats to skew the tally, while Democrats say prior turnout favored their party and the late surge exceeded expectations. The party says Republican goading spurred many formerly indifferent Democrats to register, as Republicans counter that many joined Democrats to secure their names. A Democratic rally is planned for Tuesday as campaigns open citywide.
