Allied forces press the Axis lines in Tunisia with five main operations along vital highways. French, British, American, and French units push into barriers surrounding Pont Du Fahs and Djebel Main as air power harasses supply depots and isolates Axis units from the continent.
The War Labor Board announced a plan to form a three member panel to settle the soft coal wage dispute after John L. Lewis refused to nominate a labor member. Strikes and work stoppages mounted in the Appalachian field, with 6000 miners in Union and surrounding areas idle. The board aimed to select public, industry, and labor representatives and hold hearings starting Wednesday after a policy committee meeting in New York.
The notice outlines how a $25 War Bond yields an $18.75 return contributing to steel helmets or other military needs. It explains allocations for feed for pigeons and a Garand rifle, detailing immediate reinvestment into guns or equipment, with a total of $18.75 from the $25 bond.

Stockholm April 26 A break in diplomatic relations between the United States and Finland appeared imminent with Helsinki signaling little chance of a policy reversal. A Finnish official said Americans cannot expect Finland to tie a noose around its neck as it pressure seeks a Russian war settlement and withdrawal from the conflict.
Pittsburgh April 26 An estimated 6000 miners idle as strikes spread in southwestern Pennsylvania soft coal fields. Jones and Laughlin Steel mines hit, with pickets keeping workers at two more mines. UMW says walkouts unauthorized and forecasts slow returns amid WLB dispute.
The sinking of a small Norwegian freighter in the Gulf of Mexico was the first announced vessel loss there in months. The report notes earlier Gulf losses, including the 6511 ton Amatlan seized by Mexico from Italy in 1941 and sunk in September 1946 with 10 lives lost. Axis U boats are linked to 189 merchant sinkings in other western Atlantic areas.

Lieut. Gen. Lesley J. McNair, commander of all ground forces, was seriously wounded on the Tunisian front. Gen. Ben Lear was ordered from Memphis to take temporary command of ground forces. The report noted McNair’s injury and cited his long, storied career and his belief in aggressive combat. Separately, David Chasnoff quits golf for farm work in Dodson Missouri affecting ration points.
American fighters intercepted a 25-aircraft Japanese flight near an advance airbase in Hunan province. Five Japanese planes were definitely destroyed and four probably shot down, with one American plane damaged. Capt. Joan Hampshire from Oregon became the leading ace with eight destroyed in the air and one on the ground.
American fliers resumed bombing raids on Japanese installations at Kiska in the Aleutians after two days of fog and storms. Bombers and fighters launched Saturday, blasting enemy positions though weather hindered observation. In the South Pacific, Munda, New Georgia, faced Avenger torpedo bombers and dive bombers as a possible new offensive loomed with MacArthur and Halsey coordinating operations.
Allied dispatches report German retreat in the Tunisian front as U S forces push west. French 19th Army Corps gains five mountains near the hinge between British and American sectors and overcomes a German salient. Advances note Sidi N Sir vicinity and a hill at Debel Nechat El Mazi as fighting slows.
In Macon Georgia on April 26 two leaders of the Reidsville prison break were captured near the city. Landon Harvey and D C Black were found in a car after a patrol spotted occupants eating sandwiches. A pistol cache was found. Turner was captured in Savannah last week. Three escapees remain at large.
Four people died in a Winnetka area fire at the Roloson home including Robert M. Roloson a United Airlines director his wife Ella Cary and Edward all residents west of Winnetka with Robert Roloson the only survivor aged 9. Fire officials said sparks from a fireplace started the blaze and Robert was rescued from a second floor window.
