Cuban exiles claim Castro invasion not crushed
Alpha 66 said their guerrillas remain active in eastern Cuba and gained local support despite Fidel Castro's claim that most invaders were killed or captured. Exile spokesman Andres Nazario Sargent asserted the war of liberation began with fighters welcomed by countrymen. Castro reported heavy losses among invaders and some of his own troops killed. The State Department questioned the invasion’s origin. Alpha 66 denied US origins but did not specify where it began.
