James L. West reports Ambassador Henry P. Fletcher will retire as Rome ambassador after 25 years abroad and return to the United States. Possible plans include a Pennsylvania Senate bid or a possible governor general appointment for the Philippines.

New York April 24. John F. Curry, opponent of Alfred E. Smith, is chosen to head Tammany Hall succeeding George W. Olvany. The move signals diminishing Smith influence and strengthens Mayor James J. Walker as the dominant figure with renomination assured. The Times and World view Curry's election as a shift away from Smith and a Walker led Tammany.
Vienna report says 56 students were stabbed and 17 seriously wounded in a clash between Christian and Jewish students at a public restaurant. Swords knives and pistols were used as the altercation left the establishment demolished.
In Gastonia on April 24 workers at Osage and American No 2 mills in Bessemer City walk out to join a National Textile Workers Union strike. About 50 in American unit, nearly all in Osage mill carding and spinning rooms participate. Grand jury convenes to probe Loray mill destruction at governor request. Beal habeas corpus bid by strikers’ lawyer.
In Cleveland on April 24 gangsters declared war on police and among themselves. Bombs exploded at Police Captain McMasters and Sergeant Holland residences injuring none, while two men suspected as rivals were found dead amid a bootlegger feud. Fuerstman and Shiller were dumped from a car after being “taken for a ride.”
Mrs. Mary Ware Dennett, 53, was convicted in Brooklyn federal court of mailing obscene material. She faces up to five years in prison or a $5,000 fine or both for sending her 1928 pamphlet The Sex Side of Life to her two teen sons, a copy reaching a Virginia resident triggered the case. The pamphlet has circulated for years via schools and civic groups.
The Graf Zeppelin dirigible flies over Lisbon on its final voyage before a trans Atlantic crossing set for May 15. Dr Hugo Eckner pilots the craft with 20 passengers aboard and 1200 pounds of mail, circling the city at about 800 feet before continuing south.
In Washington Ambassador Ferrara asked Cuba to exclude American claimant J. E. Barlow. He seeks recognition of a Cuban property claim worth six to nine million dollars tied to a Spanish royal grant from four centuries ago. Cuban representatives say the claim is not recognized.
The naval airship Los Angeles returned to Lakehurst New Jersey at 5:15 AM after an all night coastal training flight. It departed at 7:15 PM, flew over New York City, then along the New England coast with 47 crew under Lieutenant Commander H. V. Wiley.
Bishop James Cannon Jr of the Methodist Episcopal Church South arrived on the Olympic and ignored a wireless message from Congressman Laguardia asking why he traveled on a wet ship. He said the message was an attempt at the spectacular and would consider replying later. He returns from a winter Mediterranean cruise aboard the Calgarie.
A Clarksburg trespass detainee is believed to be Granville A. Deitz 27 sought in Southern Pines North Carolina for the murder of J. C. Kelley chief of police. Deitz claimed the name Charles Melasky. Sheriff Grimm said Southern Pines police chief Beasley planned to dispatch an officer for the suspect.
Dr Hubert Work chairman of the Republican National Committee sails from New York tonight to London as a delegate to the fifth international congress on military medicine and pharmacy. He holds the rank of colonel in the medical officers reserve corps.
Butte district mine operators announce a 25 cent daily wage reduction starting May 1. The cut erases the April 1 increase tied to copper at 24 cents, with current prices at 18 cents and underground workers earning about 5.75 dollars per day.
Farm relief dominated both chambers as the House pushed to finish its measure while the Senate debated the debenture feature in its bill. Senator Copeland proposed removing the debenture plan for an equalization fee, amid questions from Brookhart about solving the farm crisis without the president. A J Beauchamp cotton mill worker. C A Hobbs grocer. E D McCullough clerk. Russell Shelton former fireman. Juror opinions leaned against the defendant.
Sir Austen Chamberlain told the House of Commons that Britain fully shares Americas disarmament aims as outlined by Ambassador Gibson at Geneva. He praised American delegates for conciliatory spirit and said Britain seeks both arms limitation and reduction applied to all warship classes.
Mrs. W. L. Hanner awoke to find flames engulfing her Sterling Street home in Greensboro. She escaped by leaping from a window as a wall collapsed and fire blocked all doorways. Two adjoining homes owned by C. G. Welker and W. Holliday were also damaged.
