Greensboro advanced 14 City Council hopefuls, Raleigh trimmed 17 to 14, High Point held mayoral and council contests, Winston-Salem nominated three for mayor with five ward council races, Dunn selected mayoral and ward nominees, Lumberton eliminated two City Council candidates.
Four dangerous convicts escaped by sawing bars in the maximum security section of Southern Michigan Prison in Jackson. Authorities launched a large manhunt for the murder and kidnapping suspects who may be armed. Warden George Kropp called them desperate men as an emergency count found dummies in cell spots for the other three.
Enterprise staff writer Robert Marks reports the spring Southern furniture market in High Point showed strong attendance and favorable business outlook for the next six months. A case goods maker said the opening day was one of the best for traffic and orders, with buyers shopping aggressively to keep shelves stocked and meet immediate store needs.
The Avery County Prison Camp break sent 12 of 14 fugitives fleeing into western North Carolina hills. Two escapees, David Renkin and Glenn Prince, were captured in Rutherfordton after sawed bars and barbed wire escapes. Sheriff Damon Huskey said the driver who helped harbor the pair faced charges.
