City Manager Harold Cheek will personally interview five top scorers from a Civil Service list for the fire chief job left vacant since Jan. 1. Eight of ten written and oral tests were passing. The five eligible names are Myers, Thompson, Lewallen, Gay, and Leonard. Ellington Shelton and Shelton missed the list.

Near Future Desegregation Suit Returns To Court
In High Point the long running desegregation case may return to U S Middle District Court in Greensboro with a May docket. Sammie Chess Jr said the case could be set for court action after four months of dormancy while parties consider a consent order. The school board hints at possible changes due to new busing rulings and Charlotte decisions, but Chess expects no plan modification.

Mrs. George E. Hutchens dies. Big Bear founder’s widow
Mrs. George E. Hutchens, widow of the Big Bear supermarket founder, died at her Miami Shores Florida home after declining health. Born Elizabeth Lineback Hutchens in 1898, she helped build the North Carolina chain to 22 stores and served as chairwoman of Big Bear of North Carolina. She leaves four sons, two daughters, 20 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a sister. Funeral is Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with burial at Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

Four Children Die in Trailer Park Fire Incident
Four children perished in a trailer fire at Pinnex Mobile Home Park on Live Oak Road in Sedgefield before 8 a.m. Deputies and Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department found the blaze, which destroyed the trailer. Victims include Billy and Bobbie Darnell, 14 month old twins, and Billy and Dale Smith, reportedly the Smiths' children. Fire officials cited an explosion as the probable cause pending investigation.
