Bells rang as Jerusalem prepared for Easter rituals in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Priests carried the Christ body from Calvary to the Stone of Unction for anointing and burial in a marble tomb amid seven language services.
Ex general Raoul Salan, leader of the European Secret Army Organization, was captured in Algiers and flown to Paris for a military trial and probable death sentence. His arrest shocks Algerian European communities and accelerates a government crackdown on extremists linked to the failed 1961 revolt.
A rash of western North Carolina fires, including a Rutherfordton blaze, was largely contained with minor casualties. Foresters said fire lanes held firm overnight as backfires slowed spread. The Rutherfordton area burned about 200 to 300 acres with up to 250 firefighters on scene. One logger died in a separate Andrews fire while a Cherokee firefighter was not seriously injured.

A family of 10, sent north by a New Orleans segregationist group, arrived in New York City by bus. The Citizens Council of New Orleans funded the trip with tickets, meals, and $50. Officials criticized the plan as cruel and manipulative, while noted welfare eligibility would depend on job prospects.
FAA chief Halaby says a Northwest DC6 and a Holmes Drilling DC3 converged on Runway 36 from the south near seven miles out. The DC3 received right of way from the tower, avoiding collision, while a past incident near Springfield Va showed a near miss with an Eastern Electra and United Viscount circling at 7 000 feet.
